Bird Watching Encore

Heron hubris

Monday, October 2, 2006 as I finished my time on the treadmill at the gym, I witnessed Act II of the heron appearance at the thirteenth green of the Heron Lakes course.

There were golfers on the green, assaying who was "away" to determine the order of play, when the heron glided in silently at the front left apron off the green. He grandly, walked in that rhythmic TAI-CHI mindful fashion and pace to the rear of the green -traversing diagonally and grandly, not disturbing any of the balls. The players waited patiently and the heron continued his walk to the lake.I am assuming this impressive bird is a young male adult, very large and noticeably more bluish than usual. This solo procession left a very regal impression.

I thought it made quite a statement about sharing our environment. No one tried to shoo him away.

After finishing the remainder of my exercise routine, I saw him standing at the far lake edge, under a tree whose branches dip low and touch the water, probably hoping for a "catch of the day" lunch.I was able to snap a few shots with my digital camera but haven't yet downloaded. And I am still mentally questioning whether this behavior indicates the bird may have been born in the treetops of a very large eucalyptus tree located near the lake and was totally uprooted during our microburst on August 21st.

To be continued.......(I hope)
